Designation of selected National Archives holdings as Important Cultural Properties of Japan began in 1955, when the "Honcho Zoku Monzui" and 3 other items were designated as Important Cultural Properties in the "Calligraphy and Classical Books Section " for materials of high value for our countryLs history of calligraphy and history of books. In 1956 -57, 10 additional items in this section were designated. After that, a "Historical Materials Section" was established for "especially notable materials relating to important historical events and topics in various fields." In 1983 the "Kuniezu narabini Gocho" were designated as an Important Cultural Property in this section. In 1989 the "Kutsukike Komonjo" were designated in the "Ancient Manuscripts Section." In 1998,"Kobunroku" became the first government documents and records to be designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in the "Ancient Manuscripts Section." After a number of further designations, the National Archives currently has 28 Important Cultural Properties, of which 15 are in the "Calligraphy and Classical Books Section," 9 are in the "Historical Materials Section," and 4 are in the "Ancient Manuscripts Section."
