Conferences and Traning Seminars

In order to hand down the history of Japan correctly to posterity, by preserving and providing government documents and records in accordance with the Public Archives Law and the National Archives Law for public use, the National Archives conducts extensive research and studies on the range of government documents and records to be preserved, modes of their preservation, and methods of making them available for public use. We make use of the results of such research and studies in operating the National Archives, while at the same time exchanging and sharing these results with other archives in and outside Japan. For these purposes, we promote the following activities.

1) Annual Meeting of the Directors of Public Archives

In order to ensure smooth implementation of the Public Archives Act by discussing current problems as well as to maintain close contact mutually, since 1989, this annual meeting has been held.

2) Training on Public Records and Archives Management

NAJ launched the following new training programs in April 2011.
Focusing on the management of current records, these programs are offered to persons in charge of records management in state organs and Incorporated Administrative Agencies.

Public Records and Archives Management Training I (program for entry level employees)
This program seeks to help participants understand the gist of the Public Records and Archives Management Act.

Public Records and Archives Management Training II (program for persons in charge of records management)
This program helps participants understand the Public Records and Archives Management Act and other related acts and ordinances as well as master specialized issues concerning the management, preservation, and use of public records and archives.

Public Records and Archives Management Training III (special study course for persons in charge of records management)
This program aims to further enhance participants' comprehension of the Public Records and Archives Management Act and other regulations and give them professional knowledge required for the specialists prescribed in Article 4, paragraph 2 of the Public Archives Act. This is achieved by allowing participants to take the entirety or a portion of the Archives Training III (public archives specialists training course).

3) Archives Training

Focusing on non-current records management, these programs are offered to persons working in national and local public archives.

Archives Training I (program for entry level employees)
This program gives participants knowledge of fundamental issues pertaining to the preservation and use of historical public records and archives. It also seeks to raise participants' qualification as employees of public archives and the like by enhancing their knowledge of archives systems and solidifying their understanding of the purpose of the Public Archives Act.

Archives Training II (theme-specific program)
This program seeks to further enhance participants' qualifications by having them learn the methods for solving administrative problems and other issues pertaining to historical public records and archives. This is achieved through joint research and other activities concerning specific theme related to the preservation and use of historical public records and archives.

Archives Training III (public archives specialist training course)
This course gives participants the specialized knowledge required for the specialists prescribed in Article 4, paragraph 2 of the Public Archives Act.
