Public Access

Government documents and records are in principle ensured public access unless they are regarded as inappropriate to be made available to the public according to privacy protection or any other rational reasons.

Reading

So long as applicants complete the prescribed procedures at the reception desk, anyone can read materials. Users can also, for a fee, place orders to have copies made.

Search Method, etc.

The Digital Archive System can make key word or layered searches, via the Internet, making it possible to view catalog information and digitized images of the records preserved by the National Archives of Japan. Layered search enables users to search records by tracking the hierarchy of records groups of each government ministry or agency. In addition, a cross-file search function is built in to link up with a variety of databases, both domestic and international.

There are also published catalogs and paper catalogs of the government documents and records which are available to read in the reading room. The published catalogs are widely distributed to major archives and libraries nationwide.

Reference

The National Archives responds to inquiries as to whether or not certain materials are held, and the contents of materials being held in its collections.

Other Activities

The National Archives holds special exhibitions in spring and autumn, and a special thematic exhibition in summer, in addition to its permanent exhibition which is open throughout the year. For outside exhibitions, etc., with social objectives such as academic research or social education, government documents and records are loaned out subject to certain conditions. For the use of copied materials for television, publications, etc., certain necessary procedures must be followed.
