Report on the 3rd Annual Conference of ICA in Reykjavik, Iceland and the visit to the Bundesarchiv (Federal Archives of Germany)

1 ICA Annual Conference

3rd Annual Conference (AC) of the International Council on Archives (ICA) was held in Reykjavik, Iceland from September 27 to 30, 2015, attracting about 500 participants from 80 countries/territories.

Under the theme of "Archives: Evidence, Security and Civil Rights: Ensuring trustworthy information," the professional program consisted of 2 keynote addresses and more than 20 parallel sessions organized under three streams.

In a session titled "the rights of citizens & governments, legislation, principles of access, processes in denying access," Naka Sasaki, Vice-President for Administration, took the rostrum. In his presentation "Protecting Records and Making Them Widely Accessible: Undertakings by the National Archives of Japan," he introduced our undertakings to improve archival services for the public, as well as those to raise awareness about records management among the government employees.

In parallel with the professional program, ICA governance meetings were also held. Among them, NAJ delegates attended the Forum of National Archivists (FAN) on September 27 and the ICA General Assembly on September 28.

FAN meeting was kicked off with two remarkable presentations: Icelandic national archivist introduced its new archives legislation and a staff member of the National Archives of the United Arab Emirates reported its multifaceted digital undertakings to ensure better access to its holdings. After these presentations followed an active discussion on how FAN should commit to the issues of human rights and advocacy.

At the General Assembly, new elements of ICA's Internal Regulations about procedure to appoint the Secretary General and the Deputy Secretaries General were ratified. Assembly was wrapped up with a dynamic presentation by the National Archives of Korea, the host of ICA Congress in 2016, to invite the archival community to join this quadrennial event.
