Record Management Bill Submitted to the 171st Diet

Bill on management of public records was approved in the Cabinet meeting on 3 March, 2009 and on the same day submitted to the 171st Diet.

The bill is designed to strengthen the system of managing and keeping official documents and to stipulate the transfer of the significant public records to the National Archives of Japan and other national archival institutions. The Government prepared it on the basis of a final report by an expert panel "Ideal Management of Official Documents as Records Passing through Time - Now We Tackle the Issue as a National Project-", which was presented to Prime Minister Taro ASO on 4 November, 2008 by Yuko OBUCHI, Minister of State in charge of Public Records Management and National Archives, and Mamoru OZAKI, Chairman of the Panel.

The bill is expected to be passed into law during this Diet session.
