Hokusa Bunryaku

PICTURE : Hokusa Bunryaku

Topography/personal observations of Russia and Siberian regions. The Tokugawa Shogunate ordered Katsuragawa Hoshu, a scholar, to conduct interviews with Daikokuya Kodayu, a boatman from Ise-no-kuni, who had returned to Japan in 1792 (the Kansei year 4) from Russia, where he had traveled following a shipwreck on his way to Edo in 1782 (the Tenmei year 2). The main text describes in detail the community and culture of Russia, with sketches of the clothing and implements Kodayu brought back to Japan, and reproductions of regional maps.
