In Bandung, Indonesia from September 26th to 28th, the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI) held the 19th SARBICA Executive Board Meeting and International Seminar. The Southeast Asia Regional Branch of the International Council on Archives (SARBICA) included representatives from archives in ten member countries as well as observers from China and Japan. The two Japanese participants were staff of the National Archives of Japan (NAJ) and one represented Japan Center for Asian Historical Records, which is an institution founded within NAJ.

Approximately 200 participants attended the international seminar held on June 27th, which was subtitled “Disaster Management of Archives: Challenges and Solutions in Digital Era.” The opening ceremony began with a speech from Vice Governor of West Java Province and then was brought into session by Indonesia’s Minister of Administrative Reform and Bureaucracy. The meeting divided into three archival specialist lead panels: the first panel examined “Disaster Management Policy on Archives,” the second panel investigated “Disaster Management on Archives: Challenge and Opportunity,” and the third panel explored “Disaster Management on Archives: Sharing Experiences.” One Japanese participant spoke in the first panel and delivered a presentation titled “Japan Center for Asian Historical Records: Digital Archives and Disaster Management” while the other Japanese participant delivered a presentation in the third panel titled “Reconstruction after the Great East Japan Earthquake, and the Restoration Project for Damaged Official Documents.”

The Japanese presentations attracted large, engaged audiences. A lot was discussed about risk management of natural disasters as well as about how to use the Japan Center for Asian Historical Records database, which holds materials involving Southeast Asia.
