Initiatives of the National Archives of Japan after 3.11

    Day Initiative of the National Archives of Japan
    March 18, 2011 Posted a message of a condolence "To the colleagues of the archives affected by the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami" on its website.
    March 28-March 29 Mr. Kazumasa Yamazaki, then vice-president of the National Archives of Japan attended ICA Executive Board held in Panama, where the Sympathy to the disaster of Japan and Urgent Statement to support archival staff were adopeted. In response to this, Mr. Yamazaki explained the situation in Japan after the earthquake and expressed his hope to tackle reconstruction as soon as possible.
    May 20 Posted technical measures to restore official documents affected by the earthquake and the tsunami on the website.
    June 9 Held the Annual Meeting of the Directors of Public Archives, and under "Initiatives for the Great East Japan Earthquake" as one of the topics, organaized reports from damaged archives and exchanged opinions. Prior to the meeting, conducted a survey on how the disaster affected each archives and presented the result of the survey at the meeting.
    June 24 Conducted field reasearch and exchanged opinions on damaged documents in Miyagi Prefecture and Miyagi Prefectual Archives and other institutions.
    June 27 Conducted field research and exchanged opinions on damaged documents in Fukushima Prefecture and Fukushima Prefectual Archives.
    July 4 Held and exchanged opinions with related institutions on the subjcets such as "damaged level of each archives and related institutions after the Great East Japan Earthquake"and "restoration level after the earthquake."
    July 21-July 22 Conducted field reasearch and exchanged opinions in Iwate Prefecture, Miyako City, Ishinomaki City, and Ishimaki Branch of Sendai Shiogama Custom.
    July 27 Established the Great East Japan Earthquake Restoration Support Project Team within the National Archives of Japan.
    August 31-September 2 Conducted field reasearch and exchanged opinions in Miyako City, Yamada Town, Kamaishi City, and Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture and Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture.
    September 12- September 30 Implemented the Restoration Support Pilot Project to Damaged Public Documents in Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture.
    Octobor 11- Octobor 12 Conducted field reasearch and exchanged opinions on damaged documents in Onagawa Town, Ishinomaki City, and Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture.
    Octobor 26- Octobor 27 Conducted field reasearch and exchanged opinions on damaged documents in Kesennuma City and Minamisanriku Town, Miyagi Prefecture.
    *In addition to the above, the National Archives frequently collects information from and provide information to related institutions.
