The 42nd International Conference of the Round Table on Archives held in Norway



The 42nd International Conference of the Round Table on Archives (CITRA) was held in Oslo, Norway from the 11th to 17st September 2010, where some 270 participants from 83 countries/areas came together.

The theme of the CITRA conference in this year was “Trust and Access: Challenges to Managing Records and Archives” and the programme consisted of three keynote speeches, six plenary sessions and nine parallel sessions.

Titled “New Digital Media Practice”, the parallel session was held on 15th September and Mr. Mitsuoki Kikuchi, the Executive Advisor to the National Archives of Japan, chaired of the session. The speakers and participants actively discussed about the use of social media and the protection of personal information.

At the panel session “The National Archivists' Reflection Hour: World Powers-Digital Powers” on 16th September, Mr. Masaya Takayama, the President of the National Archives of Japan and five other National Archivists from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Russia and China reported their own situation. During the question-and-answer period, they talked passionately about profiles of archivists for the 21st century.

Before and after the CITRA sessions, ICA business meetings were also held. As the Chair of the East Asian Regional Branch of the ICA (EASTICA), Mr. Takayama attended the following meetings: Executive Board meeting, meeting of the Chairs of Branches, joint meeting of the Chairs of Branches and Sections, joint meeting of Program Commission, Sections and Branches. Mr. Kikuchi attended a board meeting of the International Fund for Archival Development (FIDA) as a member of trustees.

At the meeting on 12th September, Executive Board discussed the administrative issues including the new system of membership dues, engagement with UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme and new working group for nomination of Fellowship.

The Annual General Meeting on 17th September approved the new branch constitution of SARBICA and PARBICA, establishment of the Section on Literary Archives (SLA), reform of the Section on Municipal Archives (SMA) to the Section on Local, Municipal and Territorial Archives (SLMT) and new constitution of SLMT, audited financial report 2009 and the Universal Declaration on Archives. In addition, new President made an inaugural address and other newly elected officers made presentations. Mr. Ian Wilson and Mr. Olafur Asgeirsson were awarded the ICA Fellowship.

Next CITRA will be held in Toledo, Spain from 15th to 21st October 2011, under the theme of Preservation.
