International Archival Culture Exhibition 2010 in Seoul

  1. International Archival Culture Exhibition (IACE) 2010 was held in Seoul from June 1st to 6th co-organized by the National Archives of Korea and Ministry of Public Administration and Security. The venue of the IACE was COEX Convention & Exhibition Center located in Gangnam district which has been drawing attention as a new center of business and culture in Seoul. A number of families and children enjoyed the exhibition and more than 41,000 customers visited in 6 days.

  2. The distinguished guests including Minister of Public Administration and Security participated in the opening ceremony on June 1st, and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon congratulated the opening of the exhibition via a video message. Exhibition area was divided into two parts, international exhibition of archival culture and that of archival industry. The international archival culture exhibition consisted of three parts: UNESCO Memory of the World; national archives of the world; and archival exhibition on history and culture of Korea. People waited in a long line to see the Gutenberg 42-line Bible from Germany, Declaration of the Rights of Man from France, Tripitaka Koreana, and other valuable documentary heritage.


  3. In response to a request from National Archives of Korea, National Archives of Japan (NAJ) decided to join the IACE in the fall of 2009. In total, national archives from the following 16 countries participated in the exhibition: Argentina, Australia, Bulgaria, China, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Hungry, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Peru, Russia, Sweden, USA, and Vietnam. NAJ introduced its functions and activities by showing a DVD program and distributing publicity materials, and exhibited 28 replicas of the most precious holdings including records related to Korea. NAJ also actively promoted its digital archive system and Japan Center for Asian Historical Records by on-site demonstration.


  4. From June 1st to 2nd, IACE seminar was held under the theme of "Documentary Heritage, Archives, and Technology" and 11 archival leaders from 7 countries gave lectures.

  5. International exhibition of archival industry was organized by 67 companies and agencies from Asia, Europe, and USA. Each booth displayed the state-of-the-art technologies and facilities of records management or archival preservation. The popular spot was the hands-on experience section adjacent to the industry exhibition. Exhibitors arranged a variety of programs for children and students such as traditional paper-making, bamboo-strip making, wood-block printing, and digital photo editing. The booths were filled with children and their parents all day long.
