Report on the 8th General Conference of EASTICA & Seminar

  • The National Archives of Japan hosted the 8th General Conference of EASTICA (East Asian Regional Branch of the International Council on Archives) and Seminar in Tokyo from the 21st to 26th October 2007. We appreciate many participants in this session.→Program


  • We had more than 150 participants from each EASTICA member country/ region, China, Korea, Mongolia, Hong Kong, Macao and Japan, including Mr. Duan Dongsheng, Deputy Director-General of the State Archives Administration of China, Cho Yoon-myoung, Director General of the National Archives of Korea, and Mr. Demberel Ulziibaatar, Director General of the National Archives of Mongolia. At the opening ceremony on October 23rd, Mr. Shunich Uchida, Vice-Minister of the Cabinet Office and Dr.Yoneo Ishii, President of the National Institute for the Humanities and Director-General of the Japan Center for Asian Historical Records, delivered welcome speeches.


  • At the General Conference, EASTICA elected Mr. Mitsuoki Kikuchi, President of the National Archives of Japan as new Chairman of EASTICA, decided to continue the Postgraduate Certificate in Archival Studies co-organized by EASTICA and the Hong Kong University, and accepted four institutions from China and Mongolia and one individual as new members. It also decided to organize its annual seminar of 2008 in Korea on the occasion of the opening of a new annex of the National Archives of Korea in Seongnam, which is currently under construction, and the 9th General Conference in Tsingdao, China in 2009.→Resolutions


  • At the seminar of the theme on"Development of E-Government and Digital Records Management," keynote speeches were given by Dr. Kenneth Thibodeau, ERA Program Director, the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, and Prof. Shigeo Sugimoto, Graduate School of Library, Information and Media Studies, University of Tsukuba.

  • At the Symposium on October 24th titled "Archives in the Digital Era: Message from Asia", the speeches by Prof. Michihisa Hotate, Historiographical Institute, the University of Tokyo, and Mr. Shaidin Shafie, Head of Electronic Records Advisory Services Branch, National Archives of Malaysia, were followed by a panel discussion with the two lecturers and persons in charge of electronic records management from the National Archives of China and Korea, and Dr. Kenneth Thibodeau. After the panel discussion, many questions were asked by participants from home and abroad and active discussions took place about the role of the national archives in the progress of digital archive and e-government.

    After the symposium, the farewell dinner was held and attended by approx. 120 participants including Mr.Shunichi Uchida and Dr. Toshihiko Takano, President of the Japan Society for Archival Science. During the dinner, a message was sent by Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda and announced to the participants.→message by Prime Minister They enjoyed performances of Wa-Daiko (Japanese traditional drum) and Awa-Odori (Awa folk dance). In the harmonious atmosphere participants from archives in East Asia deepened the exchanges.
